South Aussie boys earn big golf scholarships from Illinois State RedBirds

Congratulations to Athletes Dream golfing Alumni Joel Durnford & Joe Hodgson from South Australia who recently were offered and accepted NCAA Division 1 golf scholarships to attend Illinois State University.

This is a tremendous achievement by Joel & Joe and a true testament to their dedication, hard work, academic guidance counsellors, golf coaches and results on the golf course while they were both attending Junior Colleges in Iowa (Indian Hills Community College & Iowa Western Community College).

Both Joel & Joe’s recruitment journey from Australia to US Junior Colleges (then onto an NCAA Division 1 golf program) has not been a smooth ride, nor a quick and easy process. In fact their recruitment campaigns were both quite lengthy between 6-18months and then onto Junior College, finally arriving at their current US college Div.1 golfing destination.

Sometimes student athletes (and many international student athletes) do not get recruited from high school directly into a 4 year college due to a large combination of factors ranging from academic, athletic and non-exposure reasons; being recruited by a 2 year Junior College program having less academic restrictions and hoops to jump through then the NCAA and NAIA academic eligibility criterias.

Joel literally a self-taught golfer & Joe were members of famous South Australian golf course Kooyonga Golf Club and both grew up playing in the tough, windy conditions the South Australian coastal courses have to offer, obviously proving to be just the right challenge that has helped their college golfing goals come to fruition.

We wish Joel & Joe great college golf careers over the next 2-3 years as they work towards successfully competing for the ISU RedBirds and earning their bachelor degree from Illinois State University.
